Eur J Endocrinol. 2020; 183: 169–180. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32449692/This retrospective study analyzed subsequent differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) in in a group of CCS (n=31) matched with patients affected by sporadic DTC (n=93) to compare clinical presentation and outcomes. CCS with subsequent DTC were identified by two source populations: the DCOG-LATER cohort o...

9.10. Primary hypothyroidism in childhood cancer survivors treated with radiation therapy: a PENTEC comprehensive review

MT Milano , JA Vargo , ED Yorke , CM Ronckers , LC Kremer , SMJ Chafe , HM van Santen , LB Marks , SM Bentzen , LS Constine , IR Vogelius

Brief Summary: This review analysed 15 original studies reporting the effects of radiation therapy (RT) on thyroid gland in childhood cancer survivors (CCS). A relationship between RT dose to the thyroid gland and risk of hypothyroidism could be extrapolated from 8/15 studies. Risk of compensated hypothyroidism increased with RT dose to the thyroid: it was 12%, 25% and 44% at 10, 20 and 30 Gy, respectively. Similarly, the risk of overt hypothyroidism was 4%, 7% and 13% at 10, ...

Brief summary: American Thyroid Association Guidelines for management of children with thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer were published in 2015 (1). Now Lebbink et al. published management guidelines from the European Thyroid Association.Pediatric differentiated thyroid carcinoma is rare. For many aspects of the disease (diagnosis, treatment, follow-up) clear evidence from randomized controlled trials are therefore missing. The p...

Brief summary: This Dutch cross-sectional study aimed to assess risk factors for impaired bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures (particularly vertebral fractures) in adult survivors of childhood cancer. The relationships between low BMD (Z-score ≤–1), very low BMD (Z-score ≤–2), fractures, vertebral fractures, and demographic, treatment-related, endocrine, and lifestyle-related factors was analyzed by logistic regression.<p class=...

Brief summary: This cross-sectional study explored the risk factors for pre-frailty, frailty, and sarcopenia in a cohort of Dutch childhood cancer survivors diagnosed between 1963 and 2001.Frailty was defined as the presence of at least two (pre-frailty) or three (frailty) of the following criteria: low appendicular lean mass (low percentage of lean tissue in the limbs assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, DXA), low muscle strength (measured with...
